Sugarcane Poem

In a summer's respite
a moment in the shadow of a bindlestiff cloud
a yeg on the hot iron rails of
   heaven's ethereal underpinning
impermanent passing
of the memory
of torrid August, that seasonal reminder
Hade's open invitation

green cutlass sea of sugarcane stalks
clamor of a shushed chorus
calling me away from devotion and obligation
to lascivious escape
to shed the tucked polo of my responsibilities
dance in the dark dirt
where the languid fox lies I acquiesce my lusts
indulge in the pageantry
   of your kiss.
